Prerequisites

Before you run APK Installer for the first time, make sure you have:

ItemDescription
🖥️ Windows 10 / 11 PCWindows Developer Mode must be enabled (see below).
📱 Android phoneAny Android device with USB debugging enabled.
🔌 USB cable or WiFiA USB data cable, or both devices on the same WiFi network.
🛠️ ADB (Android Debug Bridge)A small utility from Google. See Getting ADB.
📦 An APK fileThe app you want to install. Drag it or click to browse.

Getting ADB

ADB (Android Debug Bridge) is the official command-line tool that lets your PC communicate with an Android device. APK Installer bundles a lightweight ADB client wrapper, but you need the actual adb.exe from Google.

How to get it

  1. Visit Android SDK Platform Tools on the Android Developers site.
  2. Scroll down to Download SDK Platform-Tools for Windows and click Download.
  3. Extract the ZIP archive to any folder on your PC (for example, C:\tools\platform-tools\).
  4. Inside that folder you’ll find adb.exe. Remember its location.

Setting it up in APK Installer

On the Prepare your environment step (or later in Settings), click Select ADB and choose the adb.exe file you just extracted. APK Installer will remember the path for next time.

Enabling Windows Developer Mode

Windows blocks the installation of unsigned or non-Microsoft-Store apps unless Developer Mode is turned on. Here’s how to enable it:

  1. Open Windows Settings (press Win + I).
  2. Search for “For developers” or navigate to System → For developers.
  3. Toggle Developer Mode to On.
  4. Confirm the UAC prompt. Windows will install the required developer packages automatically.

APK Installer can open this page for you — just click Open Settings on the environment check step.

Note: Developer Mode is a Windows-wide setting. Only enable it if you trust the apps you are side-loading.

Step-by-Step Wizard

APK Installer guides you through 6 simple steps. The current step number is always shown in the title bar (e.g. Step 2 / 6).

Step 1 — Welcome

The welcome page introduces what the app does and what you need. When you’re ready, click Get Started.

Step 2 — Select APK File

Drop your APK file onto the dashed rectangle, or click anywhere inside it to open the file picker. Only .apk files are accepted.

Supported drag-and-drop file types:

  • .apk — standard Android app package
  • .xapk / .apks / .apkm — split APK packages (installed automatically)

Once the file is selected, APK Installer briefly parses it to extract the app icon, name, package name, version, and permissions — then advances you to the review page.

Step 3 — Review App Details

Take a moment to verify that the APK is what you expect:

FieldWhat it means
App nameThe display name shown on your phone’s home screen.
Package nameThe unique identifier (e.g. com.example.app).
VersionThe version number inside the APK (e.g. v2.4.1).
File sizeHow large the APK is (can help spot a corrupted or duplicate download).
PermissionsA list of things the app wants access to on your phone. Click any permission chip to open its help page.

If anything looks wrong, click ← Back and choose a different file. When ready, click Next →.

Tip: You can click any permission chip to learn what that permission does on the official Android developer documentation.

Step 4 — Environment Check

This step verifies that your PC has everything ready. It shows two cards:

  1. ADB — shows whether adb.exe is configured. Click Select ADB to choose the file. Once set, the path is saved so you won’t be asked again.
  2. Windows Developer Mode — shows whether Developer Mode is enabled. Click Open Settings to jump straight to the Windows settings page.

Both items must show a green checkmark before you can continue. APK Installer polls the Developer Mode status every few seconds, so if you enable it in the background the page will update automatically.

Good news: If you already have ADB configured and Developer Mode enabled, APK Installer skips this step entirely — you won’t even see it!

Step 5 — Connect Your Device

This is where you bring your Android device online. You’ll see a device list in the center and two quick-reference cards below — one for USB, one for WiFi.

USB connection (recommended for first use)

  1. Plug a USB data cable into both your phone and PC.
  2. On your phone: open Settings → About phone → Build number and tap it 7 times to unlock Developer Options.
  3. Go to Settings → Developer Options and enable USB debugging.
  4. Unlock your phone screen and tap Allow on the “Allow USB debugging?” popup.
  5. Back in APK Installer, click the 🔄 Refresh button to scan for devices.

WiFi connection

WiFi connection is available for Android 11+ (Wireless debugging) or for older phones after you’ve run adb tcpip 5555 over USB. Three connection modes are supported — see the full WiFi Connection Methods section below.

Selecting your device

When the list appears, click your device to select it. The row will highlight in blue. Once selected, click Install APK → to begin the install.

Screenshot: Device list showing one USB device (selected) and one WiFi device, with the Refresh and Add WiFi buttons at the top right

Step 6 — Install APK

Sit back — APK Installer is now transferring the APK to your phone and installing it. You’ll see an animated progress bar and a status message.

Important: When your phone receives the install request, it will usually show a confirmation popup. Look at your phone and tap Install or Continue. On Android 13+ and some custom ROMs (Xiaomi HyperOS, MIUI, etc.) this step is required every time.

Success

You’ll see a green checkmark and the message Installation complete!. Options available:

  • Open on phone — launches the newly installed app on your device.
  • Install another APK — resets the wizard and goes back to the file selection step.

Failure

If installation fails, APK Installer shows a red card with a human-readable reason. Common failure types are listed in the Troubleshooting section. You can click Back to device selection to re-scan and try again.

Installing Split APKs (.xapk / .apks / .apkm)

Some Android apps are distributed as split APK packages — a container file that bundles multiple APKs (base + split features + split languages). This is common for large apps downloaded from third-party stores.

APK Installer handles these automatically. When you drop a .xapk, .apks, or .apkm file, the installer:

  1. Extracts the container into a temporary folder on your PC.
  2. Finds all embedded .apk files inside it.
  3. Runs adb install-multiple to install them all at once to your device.
  4. Cleans up the temporary files afterwards.

No extra steps are needed — the experience is identical to installing a single APK.

WiFi Connection Methods

Once ADB is configured and your Developer Mode is enabled, click the + Add WiFi button on the device page to open the WiFi connection dialog. Three modes are available as tabs:

Connect directly

Simplest approach — use it when your phone’s Wireless debugging page shows a straightforward IP:port (e.g. 192.168.1.32:37891). Just copy-paste the address and click Connect.

Prerequisites: both PC and phone are on the same WiFi, and Wireless debugging is enabled on the phone.

Pairing code (Android 11+)

Use this when your phone shows a Pairing code (6 digits) separately from the main debug port. The flow is:

  1. On your phone: Settings → Developer Options → Wireless debugging → Pair device with pairing code.
  2. Copy the pairing IP:port and the 6-digit code.
  3. In APK Installer, switch to the Pairing code tab, enter both, and click Connect.
  4. APK Installer automatically scans for the debug port and connects.
Tip: The pairing port and the debug port are different. The pairing port closes after pairing, so APK Installer scans ports in the 30000–50000 range to find the real debug port automatically.

QR Code + Hotspot

Useful when you don’t have a shared WiFi network, or the router blocks mDNS/AirDrop-style discovery:

  1. Switch to the QR Code tab.
  2. Click Create hotspot & generate QR. APK Installer creates a temporary Windows mobile hotspot and shows a QR code plus SSID/password.
  3. Scan the QR with your phone — it connects to the hotspot automatically.
  4. Go back to the Pairing code tab, complete the pairing flow, and you’re done.
  5. When you close the WiFi connection dialog, the hotspot is turned off automatically.
Note: QR Code mode requires Windows to have WiFi capability. If your PC has no WiFi adapter, a warning banner appears at the top of the dialog.

Switch USB to WiFi

If you already connected your phone over USB, you can promote that connection to WiFi without re-plugging cables:

  1. Make sure both your PC and phone are on the same WiFi network.
  2. On the device list row, click the 🔌 Switch to WiFi icon.
  3. APK Installer restarts the phone’s ADB daemon in TCP mode, reads the phone’s WiFi IP, and connects.
  4. Once successful, you can safely unplug the USB cable.

Settings

Click the ⚙️ gear icon in the top-right corner to open the Settings window:

SettingDescription
ADB pathShows the currently configured adb.exe. Click Browse to change it.
ThemeChoose System (follows Windows), Dark, or Light.
LanguageSwitch UI language. Available: English, 中文 (Chinese), 日本語 (Japanese), 한국어 (Korean).

All settings are saved automatically.

Troubleshooting

Below are the most common errors you may encounter and how to fix them.

❌ “ADB not found” / “ADB is not configured”

  • Make sure you downloaded adb.exe from Google’s Platform Tools page.
  • In APK Installer, click Select ADB and point to the exact file (not the folder containing it).
  • If you keep seeing the error after selecting, re-download platform tools — the archive may be corrupted.

❌ “Developer mode is off” — can’t proceed

  • Click Open Settings to jump to the right Windows page.
  • Make sure the Developer Mode toggle is On and wait for Windows to finish installing packages.
  • APK Installer polls every few seconds — once enabled, the green checkmark appears automatically.
  • On Windows 11 25H2+, the page moved to System → For developers. The ms-settings:developers link still works.

❌ “No Android device detected”

  • USB: Try a different cable or USB port. Some cables are charge-only and don’t carry data.
  • USB debugging on the phone: Double-check it’s enabled in Developer Options.
  • Authorization: Unlock your phone’s screen. The “Allow USB debugging?” popup may have been dismissed. Revoke it in Developer Options → Revoke USB debugging authorizations and reconnect.
  • WiFi: Make sure both devices are on the same network. Corporate WiFi or guest networks with AP isolation may block ADB — use the QR Code hotpot method instead.

❌ “INSTALL_FAILED_USER_RESTRICTED” / Install canceled by user

Your phone blocked the installation. On Android 13+ and custom ROMs (HyperOS, MIUI, ColorOS, OneUI), the phone shows a confirmation popup that must be tapped manually. Look at your phone screen and tap Install.

❌ “INSTALL_FAILED_INSUFFICIENT_STORAGE”

Free up some space on your phone. Uninstall unused apps, delete old downloads, or move photos to the cloud.

❌ “INSTALL_FAILED_VERSION_DOWNGRADE”

Your phone already has a newer version of this app. Uninstall the existing version first, then re-run the install.

❌ “INSTALL_FAILED_UPDATE_INCOMPATIBLE”

The app on your phone was signed with a different developer key. This usually happens when switching between the official Play Store version and an APK mirror version. Uninstall the old app first.

❌ “INSTALL_FAILED_NO_MATCHING_ABIS”

The APK was built for a different CPU architecture. Most phones are ARM64 (aarch64); avoid downloading APKs marked as x86 or armeabi-v7a unless you know your device supports them.

❌ “INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED” / “The APK file appears to be invalid”

The file you chose is not a valid APK. Re-download it from a trusted source. This error also appears if you accidentally pick a .xapk container file without the proper split structure — use a standard .apk file instead.

❌ WiFi auto-scan fails — “No devices found”

Some routers block mDNS multicast packets (224.0.0.251) or enable AP isolation, which prevents auto-discovery. Fall back to the Pairing code or QR Code tab — these methods work even when auto-scan fails.

❌ Multiple devices connected — “more than one device”

APK Installer always asks you to click one device in the list before installing. If you still see this error, disconnect the extra devices temporarily.

FAQ

Does APK Installer install apps for me, or do I still need to confirm on the phone?

On Android 13+ and most current custom ROMs, you must confirm on the phone. Android requires a human to tap Install on a dialog even when the request comes from ADB. APK Installer shows a prominent orange reminder during installation so you don’t miss it.

Can I install paid apps I didn’t buy?

APK Installer is a tool — it installs whatever APK file you give it. Whether you have the legal right to install that APK depends on the app and the source. Please respect app developers’ copyrights and download APKs only from trusted, legitimate sources.

Do I need Android Studio or a full SDK?

No! You only need the small Platform Tools package from Google. That’s a 5 MB ZIP containing adb.exe and a handful of other utilities. You don’t need Android Studio, Java, or any emulator.

Why do I need Windows Developer Mode?

Developer Mode tells Windows that you trust the apps you’re installing from outside the Microsoft Store. Without it, Windows blocks the ADB install path as a security precaution.

Is my data safe?

APK Installer never sends your APK file anywhere — all parsing and installation happens on your local PC and over a direct USB/WiFi connection to your phone. Settings are saved locally in %AppData%\unitepage\apkinstaller\config.ini.

Which Android versions are supported?

APK Installer works with Android 6.0 and later. WiFi “Wireless debugging” (pairing code / QR) requires Android 11 or newer.

Can I install multiple APKs at once?

The wizard handles one install per run. After a successful install, click Install another APK to go back to the file selection step and repeat. Split APK containers (.xapk, .apks, .apkm) are fully supported in a single step.
